Purpose of the Study:
Several Canadian provinces are funding early intensive behavioural intervention programs for children with autism spectrum disorders. This has created a demand for well-trained tutors to provide one-to-one training for the children. An effective and efficient method to prepare tutors is sorely needed. My research addresses this need. Working with Drs. Garry Martin and C.T. Yu and other graduate students at the University of Manitoba and the St. Amant Research Centre, I evaluated whether university students can learn by self-instruction to conduct discrete-trials teaching, which is a major teaching strategy in intervention programs based on applied behavior analysis.
What our results showed:
Results are highly promising. Refinements of the self-instructional package and additional studies are currently underway
Thank you for your participation in our research!
